Gifted and talented education at The Warriner School
The information to follow will give you an insight into G&T at The Warriner. Please also check the school clubs page to see extra curriculum activities available to G&T students at the Warriner
The National Programme:
“Gifted and Talented education seeks to improve the education of gifted and talented children and young people aged 3-19 in schools and colleges throughout England. Its core objectives are to:
Achieve significant, measurable improvement in the attainment, aspirations, motivation and self-esteem of gifted and talented pupils and students, especially those at risk of underachieving, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Improve the quality of identification, provision and support in schools, colleges, clusters, partnerships and LEAs, giving priority to the weakest, and develop robust quality standards to support this.
Develop tools, and identify and use levers, to help ensure that every maintained school and college in every LEA is equipped to differentiate teaching and learning to meet individual needs at the upper end of the ability range.”

Beliefs and values
At The Warriner School we believe that all children are entitled to an education that will enable them to develop their full potential, be that intellectual, physical, aesthetic, creative, emotional, spiritual or social, finding appropriate challenge in our learning environment.
All students have individual needs, which puts personalised learning at the heart of our teaching and learning.
The Warriner School is committed to providing a sufficiently challenging curriculum for all its students. In addition, we will provide opportunities to identify and in turn nurture those who are Gifted and Talented and their abilities.
All students have an entitlement to the following:
Staff commitment and training to develop students’ full potential at all times.
Lessons that stimulate, engage, challenge, inform, excite and encourage through partnership and dialogue with teachers and other students and active participation in the lesson.
Skilled, well prepared and informed teachers who have a perspective and understanding of whole school needs, problems and policies, especially those concerning issues related to those students identified as more able.
An entitlement beyond subject teaching, including preparation for adult life and preparation for the world of work. This should include extra curricular activity, personal and social education, careers guidance and counselling, visits to local industry, work experience and community service.
What is meant by the term, Gifted and Talented
Definitions
GIFTED refers to children who are achieving or who have the potential to achieve in advance of their peers in one or more academic subject. TALENTED refers to children who are achieving or who have the potential to achieve in advance of their peers in music, art, PE or in any other sport or creative art.
What we look for when identifying our Gifted and Talented Students
Those who show an exceptional ability. This might be in a curriculum area such as mathematics, music, art or sport or be a less easily acknowledged talent such as leadership, creative ability and imagination or social maturity. Students who possess a general academic learning ability that is significantly greater than that of most of their peers. Those who are performing above students around them and show an ability beyond there their years. Gifted and Talented students may display exceptional abilities in a wide number of areas. This is not to say that more able students are more worthy of individual attention than other students - rather that, within a framework of equal opportunity, they are entitled to have their needs recognised and addressed.
How do we identify students?
No one method of identification can be entirely accurate since specific subject criteria for success differ. Therefore, we endeavour to obtain as much information about individual students as possible. The methods employed are as follows:
- Information from any previous schools
- Internal and external assessment and testing including CATS, SATS, Mock Exams, class tests.
- specific criteria developed by subjects or their professional associations
- Teacher Identification.
At the Warriner we identified Gifted and Talented pupils according to guidelines set down by the DfES, stating that in all schools there should be a gifted and talented population of 5-10%, regardless of intake. We however do not follow the recommended that the ratio of students should be a 2/3 gifted, 1/3 talented mixed. As we recognised that every child and every school is different.

GCSE EXAMINATIONS AND
REVISION
PROGRAMME
2011
To:- Parents, Carers and Guardians of Year 11 students,
We are now just weeks away from GCSE examinations. It is vital that home and school work together to ensure our students prepare themselves as effectively as possible for the examinations which will shape their future. Additional effort at this stage can make an enormous difference. Whether your child is aiming at an apprenticeship or university, the GCSE grades he/she gains are the key to success. I am writing to you, therefore, to inform you of the provision we are making to support students in this additional effort and to invite you to ensure that they take full advantage of this provision.
Please discuss the contents of this document with your child and keep it in a safe place for reference. Be prepared to encourage, support and cajole over the coming weeks.
Examination preparation with teaching staff in lessons
The formal timetable will continue until Friday 13th May. Staff will be preparing intensive revision lessons in the weeks leading up to the examinations and these classes will be the most valuable preparation for examinations. Students should ensure that they focus fully on taking advice and guidance from the staff who have a wealth of experience of examination requirements and techniques for helping students to impress the examiners.
We shall be arranging intensive English and Maths revision focus sessions for all students during the school day on Wednesday 27th April and Thursday 28th April.
All students must attend school full time until 13th May. After that date students attend only when they have an examination or when staff arrange revision sessions at their own discretion.
SUBJECT SPECIFIC GUIDANCE
Staff are providing a lot of support in addition to regular lessons. Please check through all details in this document and ensure your child is taking full advantage of the help available. The following pages contain information specific to the different subject areas. In each of these sections the following areas are explained:
Course details
This section gives advice on the exam board for the subject, course code, where to get the syllabus from (e.g. AQA website), weighting of exam against coursework and other specific details of the course.
The exam
This section gives the date of the final exam and any practical exams. Special requirements for the various exams are also explained e.g. equipment needed, anthologies etc.
Revision sessions
This section outlines the dates of any regular or one off revision sessions being offered by the subject team. Details of these sessions are advertised around the school on a weekly basis.
Resources
Revision guides, revision CDs and any commercially produced materials that are recommended for parents to buy are listed in this section
Websites
Departments have recommended useful websites here.
Revision tips
This section gives advice on specific ways in which your child should be revising for particular subjects. Some revision techniques are suited to one subject and not another. Over the coming weeks there will be targeted lessons on revision techniques in all subjects where subject teachers will be expanding on the notes given in this section.
Deadlines
Details of any outstanding deadlines for coursework or other pieces of work are given here; different subjects have different deadlines. Staff are following up late coursework but please check with your child to determine if he/she still has coursework to complete and if so, encourage him/her to plan in the time required for it.
OTHER SUPPORT
In addition to the help and guidance offered within subject departments, there are a number of other ways in which students can prepare for the exams.
Student mentoring programme
About 40 students have been identified to work with an individual mentor once a week in school to help them with their own revision programme.
Finally your child needs to have self belief and the support you offer will help this happen. If the extra effort now gives them the grades they need to open doors next year, it will all have been worthwhile.
