Emotional Literacy is the ability to recognise, understand and appropriately express our emotions. Here at The Warriner School we have been running small group work to help develop better understanding of the five key skills of Emotional Literacy. These are:-

  • Self Awareness - Knowing myself.
  • Self Regulation – Self control.
  • Empathy – Understanding others.
  • Motivation – Getting on with things.
  • Social Skills – Getting on with others.

Students may be referred to Emotional Literacy small group work in several ways. By previous Primary School referral (year 7 only), Tutor and / or Director of House referral, Self referral or as an integral part of SEN provision, however, Signed Parental consent is always required. Emotional Literacy small groups run in two term rotations. Students attend for one hour per week, and students are not removed from the same mainstream lesson for both week A and B. Some students may attend for only two terms, others for longer, depending on the individuals need. Students attending Emotional Literacy for the first time will spend the first two terms working on Transactional Analysis “The Me’s”, Cognitive Behaviour Modification “Self Management”, “The Thinking Steps” a strategy to help problem solve and Assertion Training, Thereafter, the focus would be on one of the key skills depending on the students need. Students will set themselves a SEAL challenge to work towards over the two terms. The challenge is based on one of the five key skills mentioned above. Students are then, at the end of this time, assessed on their challenge by all of their Teachers. Certificates and a small reward are then given to successful students during the last week of the second term.
