2022 Examinations Update

Summary of the outcome of the joint DfE/Ofqual consultation on changes to the assessment of GCSEs, AS and A levels in summer 2022.

Subject specific adaptions

  • GCSE English literature, History and Geography, students will have a choice of topics to answer questions on during the exam.

Changes to practical activities and assessments in sciences and in art and design

  • Centres will be allowed to deliver practical work in GCSE and AS level biology, chemistry, physics and combined science by demonstration. Centres will be encouraged to make available hands-on practical activities for students wherever possible.
  • In A level biology, chemistry, physics and geology, centres will be allowed to assess student's competence across the minimum number of practical activities required. Exam boards can carry out remote monitoring.
  • Students taking GCSE, AS and A level art and design will be assessed on their portfolio only.

Advance Information

Exam boards will provide advance information about the focus of the content of the exams for all GCSEs, AS and A level subjects (except English Literature, History and Geography) for summer 2022 exams. This will be provided by 7 February 2022 at the latest and will support student revision.

Support materials

Students will be given a formulae sheet for GCSE mathematics in summer 2022.

Students will be given an equation sheet for GCSE physics and combined science in summer 2022 covering all the equations required.

Non-Examined Assessment (NEA)

Changes to NEA and fieldwork requirements will be as 2021 but GCSE MFL propose to return to formal speaking tests in 2022, as long as it remains practical for these tests to go ahead.

Results Days 2022

The DfE has now agreed the results days will take place on 18th August for A levels and 25th August for GCSEs.
